Formatting A Top 20 Countdown

5.29.22 Note:  The last email from here had an old Subject line that referred to a Song Information site I’ve learned about. The post about it was not in the email. Here’s the link to it.  Also this tip:  An “Archives” page was published on the M1 Blog here a few months ago. I recommend you scan down the list of subject  headings on Archives here. Maybe you’ll find a helpful M1 function that you didn’t know about.

The Top Hits Countdown was the first “special feature” music radio created for itself. People love lists, they love countdowns. I’ve never worked with a radio station that didn’t have a countdown show. They are easy to format and maintain in M1 and this seven minute video is a run through the basics of setting one up.  Here’s a list of steps:

  1. In MusicONE Pro, create a Selection category for the countdown songs. Copy the song cards into the Countdown category.
  2. Put the songs in the Countdown category into countdown order;  Song #20 will be in Rank order position 1.   Song #1 in the Countdown will be the last song in Rank order.
  3. If it is a weekly Countdown, you’ll remove a few songs, replacing them with new Hits and you’ll put the songs into the new countdown order.  After this is done, view a Play Number column to be sure all the songs have the SAME Play Number, whatever it is.  (Play Number is explained here.)
  4. Create the Countdown Format Clock(s).   If it is a multi-hour countdown and each hour has the SAME number of songs in it, you can usually use just one clock for all the hours.  In the video example, Hour ONE has 12 songs and Hour TWO has 8, so two clocks are needed.
  5. Add the new Clocks to the Dayformat(s).
